Dr Simon Brown has been awarded an Honorary Companionship by the Royal College of Paramedics in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the paramedic profession and emergency care across the UK.

The award was presented during the Royal College of Paramedics’ Honours and Awards Ceremony in Sheffield yesterday (14 July).

Dr Brown has played a pivotal role in developing the national Joint Royal Colleges Ambulance Liaison Committee (JRCALC) Clinical Guidelines since 2004. Used by ambulance clinicians across the UK every day, the evidence-based guidance underpins clinical decision-making and has helped improve the care provided to thousands of patients.

Alongside his national work, Dr Brown has made an enormous contribution to South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS), serving as Assistant Medical Director, supporting Thames Valley Air Ambulance since its inception and volunteering with the Thames Valley Immediate Medical Care Scheme (BASICS) for more than 40 years.

Dr John Black, Medical Director at South Central Ambulance Service, said:

“Dr Simon Brown has been instrumental in helping to improve the clinical outcomes of patients in need of emergency and urgent care through leading the development of national clinical practice guidelines for ambulance services for over 20 years. Dr Brown has also made very significant personal contribution delivering voluntary emergency care to patients in Berkshire out-of-hours through his membership of the Thames Valley Immediate Medical Care Scheme (BASICS). SCAS remains indebted to Dr Brown for all of his kindness, expertise and outstanding support he has willingly provided to our patients and staff at any time of the day or night.”

Dr Brown’s distinguished career has also included responding to major incidents such as the 2004 Ufton Nervet rail crash and the 7 July 2005 London bombings.

Everyone at SCAS congratulates Dr Brown on this well-deserved recognition and thanks him for his exceptional service, leadership and unwavering commitment to improving patient care.
