Women attending a heart health event in Alton on 11 February were given the opportunity to learn vital lifesaving skills, thanks to an engaging and practical session led by Paramedic Deborah Foster and Community First Responder Mark Blythe.
The event, organised by NHS Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board, focused on raising awareness of heart health among women and Deborah and Mark brought the subject to life with hands-on demonstrations and open, informative discussions.
Attendees gathered around as the pair demonstrated basic life support techniques, guiding participants through what to do in an emergency and helping to build confidence in responding to cardiac arrest. They explained the signs and symptoms to watch for, ensuring everyone left with a better understanding of how to recognise when someone needs urgent help.
The session was interactive, with women asking questions, sharing experiences, and practising key skills in a supportive environment. For many, it was the first time they had seen or tried these techniques and the reassurance of learning directly from SCAS made a lasting impression.
Lana Mullins from NHS Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board praised the impact of the session, saying:
“Mark and Deborah were fantastic, a huge thank you to you both for coming and speaking with everyone! The attendees seemed to enjoy the opportunity to engage and ask questions.”
By the end of the event, participants left not only more informed about heart health, but empowered with practical knowledge that could one day help save a life which is a powerful reminder that awareness, confidence, and community learning can make a real difference.
