For Mark Potts, becoming a Public Governor with South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) has been a rewarding way to support his community and gain a deeper understanding of how the ambulance service operates.

“Being a Public Governor is a fantastic way to get involved with the ambulance service and discover the needs and wants of your local community,” Mark said.

Although new to the role, Mark has found the support and training invaluable.

“I’d never been a governor before, so it was daunting at first,” he admitted. “But I’ve received great encouragement and training to help me learn and grow into the role.”

Mark describes the position as having two main responsibilities: holding Non-Executive Directors to account, and representing the people in his area.

This includes attending Council of Governors meetings, observing board sessions, asking questions, and feeding back issues raised by local residents.

“I spend time at community events, speaking with groups, and listening to how people view the ambulance service,” he explained. “It’s about ensuring their voices are heard.”

Through his work as a governor, Mark has developed new skills, grown in confidence, and discovered the satisfaction of giving back.

“This role has increased my confidence and given me tools that are useful in all areas of life — as well as the joy of supporting my community,” he said.
