Throughout this month we have had a focus on falls which make up 10% of the incidents we attend. We’ve created a Falls Prevention Checklist that you can use to help identify common causes of people falling over in their own homes. Please use this and share with friends and family to help keep people safely at home for as long as they would like.
Household:
Living Room
- Clear walkways of clutter and cords
- Secure rugs with non-slip backing or remove them
- Ensure good lighting, including near seating areas
- Use stable, easy-to-stand-from furniture – consider chair risers if needed
Bedroom
- Have the bed at a proper height for easy access
- Keep a lamp and phone within reach of the bed
- Place a non-slip mat next to the bed
- Keep the floor clear of clutter and cords
Bathroom
- Install grab bars near the toilet and shower
- Use non-slip mats in the tub/shower
- Ensure the floor is dry and clutter-free
- Consider a raised toilet seat with armrests
- Consider a stool in the shower if standing for long periods
Kitchen
- Store frequently used items within easy reach
- Keep the floor dry and clean – clear spills quickly
- Avoid step stools – use long-handled tools instead
- Ensure clear, wide pathways
Hallways and Stairs
- Keep pathways clear and well-lit
- Install sturdy handrails on both sides of stairs
- Use night lights in hallways
- Secure or remove runners and cords
General Health:
- Stay as fit as possible – exercise if you can, even walking and seated exercises make a difference
- Avoid excessive alcohol as this can cause falls
- Stay hydrated
- Get regular blood pressure tests
- Have regular medication reviews
- See your GP about chronic conditions that could affect this ie. Osteoporosis
- Have regular eye tests
Clothing:
- Wear well-fitting shoes or slippers
- Avoid long dresses or trousers. Wear a belt if trousers are loose.
- Wear a pendant alarm if possible in case of a fall
Other advice:
- Keep an eye on your pets!
- Don’t rush to the toilet!
- Have a few phone bases nearby so you don’t have to rush
- Don’t rush to the front door
- Don’t try to carry too much/heavy things/over-reach
- Clean up any spills immediately
