To mark the launch of Road Safety Awareness Week, we partnered with Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (OUH) to host a public talk exploring what happens in an emergency.

Around 40 members of the public attended in person to learn how to stay safe on the roads, what to do when blue lights appear in the rear-view mirror, how emergency crews respond at the scene, and what happens next if a patient needs to be taken to Accident & Emergency.

Community First Responders Helen Roberton and Malcolm Gee welcomed guests on arrival, offering hands-on demonstrations of CPR and defibrillator use — invaluable, life-saving skills.

More about the event can be found here: https://www.scas.nhs.uk/public-talk-in-oxford-behind-the-blue-lights-what-really-happens-in-an-emergency/

The session was introduced by Helen Ramsay, Lead Governor at SCAS, and Ariana Adjan,  Governor, OUH, followed by presentations from:

  • Stuart Webb, Education Manager, SCAS
  • Paul Grant, Education Manager, SCAS
  • Edward Norris-Cervetto, Consultant in Emergency & Prehospital Medicine, OUH and Thames Valley Air Ambulance

The event offered a fantastic opportunity to learn more about road safety and the innovative technology and developments that help emergency teams save lives.

Caroline Rouse, Governor and Membership Manager, OUH, said:

“Members and the wider public were able to see how services across Oxfordshire work seamlessly together — getting to the scene quickly, providing expert care, and ultimately saving lives. The speakers were excellent, and the people I spoke with afterwards told me how much they enjoyed and valued the event.”.
