On 10 August, Wycombe town centre came alive for a special 999 Day of Public Engagement, giving the public a chance to meet the emergency services that serve their community.

SCAS paramedics and our dedicated community first responders (CFRs), coordinated by David Vickery, emergency care assistant, attended the event alongside colleagues from local emergency services. Huw Pateman, public governor and co-responder supported the event. Together, we had the opportunity to teach members of the public the lifesaving skill of CPR, demonstrate the wide range of equipment carried on an ambulance, and explain how we use lights and sirens to safely make progress through traffic when responding to emergencies.

The event brought together partners from across the emergency services, including Thames Valley Police, Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service, and Buckinghamshire Lowland Search and Rescue. Each organisation showcased their expertise, shared important safety messages, and gave the public a behind-the-scenes look at the vital work that goes into keeping our communities safe.

David Vickery said “It was fantastic to see so many families, young people, and local residents engaging with us, asking questions, and even having a go at some hands-on activities. Events like this not only build trust and awareness, but also help people feel more confident about what to do in an emergency.”
