In February, members of St Mark’s Church in Denham attended a Children’s Basic Life Support presentation delivered Huw Pateman, Public Governor and Tracy Mould, Community Engagement Training Officer (CETO).

The session began with an overview of the role and responsibilities of a Public Governor, including how governors represent the interests of members and the wider community within SCAS. Information was also provided on where attendees could access further details about the Trust’s governance arrangements.

Tracy then led the main body of the presentation, which focused on the key physiological differences between children and adults and how these differences influence emergency response. The session explored a range of potential paediatric emergencies, including allergic reactions, scalds and burns, fits and convulsions, vomiting and diarrhoea, choking, and the principles of paediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).

Practical demonstrations formed an important component of the session. Using infant and child mannequins, Tracy demonstrated the correct techniques for administering back blows, abdominal thrusts and paediatric CPR. Participants were then given the opportunity to practise these skills themselves in small groups.

Throughout the practical exercises, Tracy and Huw provided supervision, answered questions and offered guidance to ensure techniques were performed safely and effectively.

The session concluded with a question-and-answer discussion. Feedback from participants indicated that the training had significantly increased their confidence and that they felt better equipped to respond appropriately should they encounter a paediatric emergency.

The event provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen community knowledge and resilience through practical education and engagement.
