Funding received from the Department of Transport and Department of Health and Social Care to support the electrification of the NHS fleet is expected to save South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) an estimated £70,000 a year.

As part of a national scheme, SCAS was awarded £279,173 to install electrical vehicle chargepoints at four of the trust’s locations:

  • Milton Park Fleet Services, Oxfordshire
  • North Harbour Resource Centre, Portsmouth
  • Nursling Resource Centre, Southampton
  • Winchester & Eastleigh Resource Centre

The investment in electrical chargepoints will deliver reductions in fuel and maintenance costs that can be redirected into frontline care.

Jonathan Guppy, head of sustainability at SCAS, said: “Investing in the EV charging infrastructure at SCAS to support fleet electrification is essential in realising cost savings, removing air pollution from diesel fumes and reducing our carbon footprint.”

The national scheme led by the Office for Zero Emission Vehicles saw £8 million awarded to 62 NHS trusts for projects at 224 sites.
