Today, Friday 25 July, is World Drowning Prevention Day 2025.
Since 2000, the global drowning rate has dropped by 38%, but 300,000 people still die from drowning every year. Today, South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SCAS) is joining organisations across the world to urge that everyone, young and older, learns the lifesaving skill and self-rescue technique of floating.
If you get into trouble in the water, knowing how to float can save your life.
But we all float differently. By practising how to float in a safe and supported environment, you can learn what floating looks and feels like for you, helping you to be better prepared for an emergency situation.
You can learn to float by visiting your nearest supervised swimming location, like your local pool or a lifeguarded beach. Find your nearest lifeguarded beach, along with more information on how to Float to Live here: Find Your Nearest RNLI Lifeguarded Beaches
In August, SCAS will be carrying out a month long water safety publicity campaign aimed at reducing the number of deaths by drowning, and water-related emergencies, across the South Central region.
