Milton Keynes, 16 June 2025 — In celebration of Learning Disability Week 2025 “Do you See Me?”, Milton Keynes’ emergency services came together to host a collective community event at the Blue Light Hub in West Ashland to see our local community. The event welcomed 237 attendees from local learning disability and SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) services, offering a day of education, empowerment, and engagement.
The initiative, aimed to build trust and familiarity between individuals with SEND needs and the emergency services that serve them. Attendees had the opportunity to interact with personnel from Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service, South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS), and Thames Valley Police (TVP) through a series of interactive and inclusive activities.

Highlights of the day included:
- Fire safety demonstrations and a chance to explore fire engines with Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue.
- First aid skills and ambulance tours led by SCAS. Anup, the Chair of our Learning Disability Patient Panel Group attended to meet our attendees (and have a photo with 999Ted!)
- Community safety and police vehicle displays from TVP.
- Guidance on emergency contact numbers including 999, 101, and 111.
All services committed to ensure inclusivity was at the heart of the event, including the fire service constructing a custom access ramp to allow wheelchair users to explore the inside of a fire engine. The event also featured sensory spaces and wellbeing areas, ensuring a welcoming environment for all.

“Our mission was to create an inclusive space where everyone feels welcomed and empowered,” said Saricka March, Learning Disability Specialist for SCAS. “Together, we’re making a difference by helping individuals with diverse needs feel confident and safe when engaging with emergency services. It’s great to see all three services being so passionate in supporting reducing health inequalities.”
This event marks the first-ever SEN(D) event hosted at the Blue Light Hub in Milton Keynes and sets a precedent for future community-focused initiatives.
