Last week SCAS attended Blackbird Leys campus in Oxford to share information about Mental Health Awareness week.

SCAS were invited to attend the event, along with multiple other health organisations across the campus, by student behaviour and welfare officers Megan Osborne and Aino Hanna. This was co-ordinated by Nikhyta Patel in collaboration with the activate learning teams and was aimed at students taking practical college courses such as bricklaying.

SCAS was able to share with the college students all about specific mental health services in their area as well as the role that the ambulance service plays in mental health crises. Our clinical lead for Mental Health, Steve Jephcote led the session along with Helen Ramsay, SCAS’s lead governor and Sal Zahid-Saunders who is our patient panel mental health chair.

Nikhyta said ‘It was lovely to be invited and speak to so many students. We had some conversations around the types of staff the students may come across on an ambulance and what Mental Health services are available in the area, specifically for young people.

The teachers also found it insightful and learnt of many services they could signpost patients to for mental health. Some of the teachers even shared their own stories of how quick the ambulance had attended when they had to call for medical assistance.’

The students were really engaged with our team and asked some great questions and we loved being there!
